Omar Jean Kampschmidt

| Nijmegen, Holland

Enlisted as a Private in the Army Air Corps during WW II.  Completed primary flight training and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant.  Underwent C-47 aircraft transition and operational training at Alliance Army Air Field, Nebraska.  In March 1944, he deployed from Baer Army Air Field, Indiana to the European Theatre of Operations at RAF Fulbeck, England and was assigned to IXth Troop Carrier Command, 50th Troop Carrier Wing, 442nd Troop Carrier Group, 304th Troop Carrier Squadron.  As part of Operation “MARKET GARDEN” on 17 September 1944, he flew from RAF Chilbolton as the co-pilot of a Douglas C-47A Skytrain nicknamed “Sonya” (serial # 43-15111) with nose fuselage code V4.  While on a 101st Airborne paratroop drop mission over Nijmegen, Holland his aircraft was struck by flak from anti-aircraft fire.  He was killed when his aircraft crashed in flames after the drop.
