Personal Sacrifice
If this is the John Campbell I remember of Co.A, 1st Bn., 52nd Inf., 198th LIB, Americal Division, he died in my place on that fateful day. As we were in column on March 3, 1969 somewhere in the Quang Nin province, we came under sniper and then limited small arms fire from the left, upper side of a hill. John had moved around me toward the front of the column while we returned fire blindly up the hill. As I glanced to my right, an NVA regular came out onto the trail and fired in our direction striking John in the right side of the neck inflicting an almost immediate, fatal wound. Even though it has been 32-1/2 years, I think I recall him having a letter in his helmet liner to a fiancee in California. In any event and to this day, I have always felt like he took that bullet in my place because he moved to where I had been only seconds earlier. May God bless him and his family because he was a HERO for me. Two days later, I was severely wounded also but got to take the "Freedom Bird" back home.Tuesday, October 23, 2001

I miss my brother, Johnny
I was told, by our government, that my brother was killed, protecting women and children, in a village. My brother's honor guard, Tim Macorkel, I think that was, his last name, told me, that we were, being lied to, by the government. Tim went back, to Vietnam, after the funeral, and upon an invesgation, he learned, that my brother, was, a point man, on the Ho Chi man, trail and was killed, by a snipper.
