Greg Hubbard's Dad; Claude Lavern Hubbard (1923-1982) U.S. Army

(US Army, WWII - Served in the Philippines) # 20733499. Enlisted 23 Dec. 1940 into the National Guard. Claude finished 3 years of high-school, was single at enlistment and entered the Army from Kansas.

In the 1930 Census, Ona D (age 43, Father) Working in Construction/Building and Maud L (age 40, Mother) had Ora L (17, son) working as Laborer/Building and Claude L (age 7, son). In the household was Fred Shaw (age 17) listed as a Laborer.

My Dad's name was Claude Lavern Hubbard born Mar. 02,1923 to Ona D. Hubbard and Lulu Maude (Christman) Hubbard. I located an obituary for Bertie Christman in family papers. The obituary mentions Bertie’s son, Clarence Christman and talks about his military service. Clarence Christman was my grandmother’s, (Lula Maude Christman Hubbard’s) nephew or my father (Claude Lavern Hubbard’s) first cousin. My dad joined the military around 1940. The family tells the story that it was 2 weeks before he graduated from high school in Luray Kansas. Like so many others he gave up things in life to go and serve his country. He served in the Philippines During WWII. He Joined the Army and left the military as a Staff Sgt. As with a lot of WWII vets, he never talked about it. My dad died in 1982 from lung cancer, & other illnesses. I learned about his cousin Lt. Clarence Christman by locating the family obituary. I was amazed that they served in the same war and I didn't even know he (Clarence) existed. As I said, my father never talked about the war. As I learned about this information, I had to stop and thank God for the service of all who sacrificed, and for bringing my father home alive.
