Petar Ranic, son of Jovan and Sava Ranic, born 24 June 1884 at #6 Curlovac, Bjelovar-Bilogora County, Croatia. Baptised 28 June 1884, in parish Novi Pavljani, Bjelovar-Bilogora County. His father Jovan Ranic died 20 Dec 1896 at age 60, and his mother Sava died 18 July 1897 at age 52. Young Petar was just 13 years old. The property at #6 Curlovac was sold in 1904 with the proceeds shared by the Ranic children. It is unknown how long Petar stayed with his siblings in Curlovac. As a young man Petar worked at the Lipizzaner horse farm in Djakovo, Croatia.  His older sister Eva married in November 1904 to a Gjura Raletic of #28 Borovljani Croatia, the same village where Petar’s future wife Sofia Raletic, daughter of Petar and Sava Raletic of #5 Borovljani. They married about 1905/6, their first child Marija was born in 1907 but died at age four on 18 December 1911 at Vlaislav #53. Petar emigrated to America on the S. S. Breslau from Bremen to Baltimore in June 1907. He lists his destination as that of his sister-in-law Marija Raletic Janic in Portsmouth Ohio. He was in Columbus Ohio from June to Nov 1907. He then went to Canada. Family stories indicate he worked as a lumberjack while in Canada. Border Crossing records indicate his coming back into the U.S.A., at age 25, through the port of Niagara Falls, New York. Two records exist of his re-entry from Canada to the U.S.A., the first record on 26 September 1909, the second in October 1909 where he lists his destination as Lackawanna, New York. The 1910 Census finds him in Jefferson Township, Allegheny County, PA. He is employed as a coal miner in the Alice mine. His wife Sofija would join him in 1912. Their first son, George, was born 11 April 1913 in Braznell, Fayette County, PA where Petar worked as a coal miner in the Sumner No. 2 Mine. Their next child, Mary, was born 10 July 1914 in Jefferson Twp, Allegheny County, PA. They would purchase property in Jefferson Twp, along Lewis Run Road, at the foot of Eliot Lane. Now known as Peter and Sophia Ranich, the rest of their children were all born in Jefferson Twp. (present-day Jefferson Hills Borough) Allegheny County, PA; Zora born 1916, twins Kay and Peter born 1919, Lillian born 1921, Emil born 1923, and Mildred born 1924.. Petar worked in the coal mines and eventually in the Steel Mill in Clairton, PA until his retirement. On 1 Nov 1949, at age 65 years 3 months & 6 days, he died from pancreatic cancer in St. Joseph Hospital, Southside, Pittsburgh, PA. He was buried on 4 Nov 1949 in Sec K, Single Block, Lot 0622, Grave 1, Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Elizabeth Twp, Allegheny County, PA. Their first grandchild was born in 1935. They would have 28 grandchildren (15 males and 13 females).
