New Mother in New Home, Mary Morris Miles, Ages 22 to 24

Magna, Salt Lake, Utah

042-FH-MMM-038aa -- Mary Morris & Henry Lee Miles Marriage – 02 Nov 1922.jpg

Picture 042 -- 1923.  The little house on the left is in Magna, on Spencer Street.  And this is the house where I, Flora Annie Miles (Duncan), was born in 1923.  Sometime after my birth, Henry and Mary moved to Tooele (no picture of this house on West Street), which is the house where my brother, George Lee Miles, was born in June of 1925.  And then we moved to this house on Main Street (Center picture) which was shake shingle siding.  The house on the right shows some of the improvements that Dad made on the house that Dad made during the years that he lived there.  He put a foundation under the house, where he dug out a place to make a cellar.  He also put shiplap (clapboard) on the house, and he put lathe and plaster on two rooms in the front (because drywall did not exist at that time).  And then I don’t remember what year it was, that he built on to the back, and made a sturdy cellar door.  And we had a bedroom and a place for Mom to have a washer outside instead of the kitchen.  And I remember when he nailed up a place to have hooks on the wall behind the kitchen door so that we had a place to hang up our coats.

2 images

Picture 043 -- 1926.  There are 3 babies in this picture 043, and two babies in the next picture 044, who are the 5 children of Henry Lee Miles and Mary Morris (Miles).  The baby you see on the left is a picture of me, Flora Annie Miles.  I was born in 1923, and named after the first names of my grandmothers, Flora Mae Forster Morris, and for my other grandmother, Annie Elizabeth Walk Miles.   The baby in the center is my younger brother, George Lee Miles, born on 10 June 1925, and named for his grandfather George Vernon Morris and his father Henry Lee Miles.  The baby on the right is my sister, Mary Ruth Miles, born in 1927.

Picture 044 -- 1930 to 1932.  The baby on the left is my sister Helen Joyce Miles, born in 1929.  The baby on the right is my brother Morris Tura Miles, born on 09 Sep 1931.  Now, Morris, of course got his name from Mother’s maiden surname of “Morris.”  And “Tura” was the name of the doctor that took care of Mom and Morris when he was born.

045-FH-MMM-059aa -- Mary Morris Miles Children 1930.jpg
3 images

Picture 045 -- 1930.  A picture of the four Miles children in 1930.  There is George on the left, whom I called “Bud,” which is short for “brother,” I guess.  But we just called him “Bud.”  And then myself Flora in the middle, and Ruth on the right, with smaller Joyce in the front middle.  On the far right, you can see that the wooden shingles are still on the side of our house.  And the house in the background left belonged to our next door neighbor, Harriet St. Clair.  She and her sister who lived next to her was Hannah Gillespie.  And across the street was Sarah and Joe Taylor, three sisters and a brother who were related to President John Taylor.

Picture 046 -- 1932.  The baby whom I am holding is Morris at a year old.  Bud is on the left, Mary Ruth on the right, and Helen Ruth is in front of Bud.  You can see the house is looking really nice, with its new clapboard siding.

Picture 047 -- 1933.  A picture of the 5 Miles children, Bud and me (Flora) in the back, Ruth, Morris, and Helen in front.  You can see a picture of the house belonging to the England family on the other side of us.

Picture 054 -- 1944.  Mom 43 years old.  This is where she had cut her hair.  At that age she had been pregnant and had a 9 pound baby girl that was stillborn.  After she recovered from that, she cut her hair.  And she started wearing a little lipstick.

Picture 055 -- 1944.  The children are growing up.  I was age 20 at this time.

Picture 056 -- 1944.  This was during World War II.  My brother Bud went into the US Navy out of high school at age 17.  He enlisted in the Navy.  I went to work at Hill Airfield in 1941 and 1942.  And Ruth went to California after she graduated.  She went to work for a company that made shims.  And I guess it is kind of interesting, that when they built the army depot in Toole, these people came to work there, and they had big trailers.  And my dad had two or three trailers in the back yard, and turned the chicken coup into a shower.  And my sister Ruth would go up through the yard to the home of Henry Smith to get milk every day.  At that time, she met this fellow who had come with a family to work at the depot.  She ended up going to California and working and marrying Dotchell Emery Rosecrans.  She was the first in the family to marry.

071-FH-MMM-022d -- Mary Morris Miles Age 58 July 1959.jpg

Picture 071 -- 1959.  A picture of mom.

A picture of mom.  Back in 1947, my dad took over a family business that was started by my grandmother and grandfather Miles and two uncles.  Dad built a house down in Erda, a town 3 miles north of Tooele.  The house was right across from the drive-in movie theater.  Mom and dad lived in the basement next to the business for a while, until dad built the top part of the home.  Dad built up this little business, where they lived until mom was age 74.  Mom was the bookkeeper.  The business was a gas station and bar that had a pool table, juke box, and food service.  The juke box was a favorite with the grandkids.  Dad (Henry Lee Miles) would give quarters marked with red nail polish to his grandchildren to use in the juke box, and the marked quarters would be returned to him when the juke box was serviced.  The grandchildren remember how much fun this was.  And they especially remember drinking cold root beer sodas and playing pool when there were no customers.

Picture 072 -- 1963.  A picture of mom with some of the ribbons she won at the Utah State Fair.  My grandmother, Annie Walk Miles, used to take handicrafts and canning exhibits to the state fair, and she would use the money from her winnings to pay her property taxes.  And she suggested to my mom that she try to do the same thing.  So, mom went in 1963 and then subsequently became the canning champion of the state of Utah for two years.  And this is a picture of her with some of her canning and the ribbons she won.  A subsequent picture that I took of mom a few years later will show in vibrant  color the enormous collection of ribbons the mom won.  The ribbons seen in this picture are only a few of the hundreds she won.

Tooele, Tooele, Utah

Picture 101 -- 1977.  Now when mom was 74, Morris bought this little house up in Tooele and moved her out of her home in Erda.  He figured that at age 74, she needed to be relieved of all the problems of keeping her Erda property in good shape.  And Morris cleaned out the garage and made the garage into a place where he had his personal things and his bedroom and his piano.  And this little house had one bedroom, a kitchen, and a living room.  And here is a picture of mom standing outside of her house with her roses.  One of the things that mom loved was planting and harvesting her gardens, growing flowers, and tending to her grapevines and fruit trees.  She even experimented with grafting new branches on to her fruit trees.
