A short biography of Dr. John Willson and his plantations

Sandy Run and Longridge Plantations

Dr. John Willson was born on November 24, 1805 on his father's plantation named Cedar Grove. He was the son of Irish immigrant and physician, John Willson and Elizabeth Dickson. Dr. Willson like his father owned many slaves. However, he was distinguised for his remarkable kindness towards them and to the needy around him. Dr. Willson was very politaclly active and died in office as a senator in 1856. His son, Rev. John Owens Willson would later write, "The only times I ever saw my father angry were when a patrol pnished one of his negroes and when a school-master severely chided his oldest daughter." Nine years after Dr. Willson's death in the Civil War, his homeplace was spared from 4 Union raids due to his strong Union opinions. John Willson is buried in Wassamassaw Baptist Church Cemetery in the Willson Family Plot.
