About Joseph Palmer (177-1842)

Springfield Plantation, Berkeley, SC

Joseph Palmer (1777-1841), son of John Palmer and Ann Cuhasac, planted cotton at Springfield Plantation in Upper St. Johns Parish, Berkeley, SC. Built in 1817 by Joseph Palmer, the Springfield Plantation house is now submerged under Lake Marion as a result of the Santee-Cooper project [1]. He died in 1841.

Palmer left his wife Elizabeth Catherine Porcher (daughter of Peter Porcher) use of Springfield for as long as she remained his widow. She died two months after Joseph Palmer and the plantation passed to his son Joseph Palmer (b. 1818), who lived at The Rocks Plantation, and used the Springfield Plantation house as his medical office [2].
