National Guard sent to protect Little Rock Nine
24 Sep 1957 | Little Rock, Arkansas
Just days after Arkansas Governor Faubus forbade the entrance of nine African-American students into Little Rock Central High School, on September 24, 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower ordered the National Guard to Little Rock to enfore the segregation of the high school, in protection of the Little Rock Nine. The previous Supreme Court decision of Brown vs. Board of Education illegalized segregation of public schools in the U.S., and was a landmark in civil rights legislation. National Guardsmen would protect this select group of students throughout the school year.
