5 Sept 1774 | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
On September 5, 1774, 12 of the American colonies organized the 1st Continental Congress, appointing representatives from all over the continent. Though a predecessor to the 2nd Continental Congress, the organizing American government of the Revolutionary War, the congress was influential in uniting in response to the British Intolerable Acts. Following the controversy of the Stamp Acts, the 1st Continental Congress met in the centrally located city of Philadelphia, planning the Articles of Association, and planning the meeting of the 2nd Continental Congress to effectively govern the colonies during the war with Great Britain.
