On the 4th day of April one thousand eight hundred and seventy one, personall appeard before me Aug J. Falsker, County Clerk within and for the county and State aforesaid, Thomas Elder, aged 77 years, a resident of Grant Precinct, County of Richardson, State of Nebraska, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is married, that his wife’s name was Mary E. Daniels, to whom he was married at Mtn Stirling, Brown County, State of Illinois, between the tenth and fifteenth days of April 1867; that he served the full period of sixty days in the Military service of the United States in the war of 1812; that he is the identical Thomas Elder who volunteered in Captain Henry Ulry’s company, Duncan McArthurs Regiment, Gen. Hull’s Brigade, at Adelphi, Ross County, State of Ohio, sometime in the month of April 1812; and was taken prisoner at Gen. Hulls surrender, Fort Detroit, Michigan; that his place of rendervous was Dayton, State of Ohio, as a private soldier under Gov. Meigs as commander, the Gov marched us to Camp Meigs between Dayton and Urbanna, here the Gov publicly delivered his command to Gen. Hull, we then marched to Urbanna and were joined with a portion of the heroes of Tipacanoe commanded by Col Milles, we then proceeded north to The Scioto river and built Fort McArthur; thence to the River Oglaze and built Fort Finly; thence some distance in the black swamp and built Ft. Necessity; thence to Detroit, thence to Sandwich.
Was engaged in a skirmish led by Col. Cass against the British at Aux canards River, between Sandwich and Malden Upper Canada, after this he fought in the battle of Brownstown Mich. under command of Major Vanhorn, here Captains Ulry, Gilercase, Bosler and McCulloch were lost or killed. McCulloch was acting in the capacity of a spy and was killed by the Indians before the commencement of the regular engagement. He was at the siege of Fort Detroit made prisoner upon Gen. Hulls surrender and sent home on parole of honor; crossed lake Erie on the Brig Mary, under British Guards and landed at Cleveland, Ohio, and consequently had no discharge.
That he at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States, adhered to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them aid or comfort; or exercised the functions of any office whatever under any authority, or pretended authority, in hostility to the United States; and that he will support the constitution of the United States that he is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act; that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States, under the provisions of the act approved Feb. the 14th, 1871, and he hereby constitute and appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation, Marshal L. Libbee of Richardson County State of Nebraska, his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim and obtain the pension certificate that may be issued; that his post office is at Dawsons Mills, County of Richardson, State of Nebraska, that his domicile or place of abode is in the vicinity of Dawsons Mills County of Richardson, State of Nebraska.

Death of Jeremiah T. ELDER --The July 18, 1889 issue of The Rushville Times newspaper reads as follows:
"A sad accident happened at the residence of Allison Ingles, of near Erwin, last evening in which Thomas Elder lost his life. Something got wrong with the pump and Mr. Elder volunteered to go down and see if it could be fixed. While he was trying to unloosen one of the sections the wall caved in on him, killing him instantly. About twenty feet of sand and rock was taken out before his body was recovered. The unfortunate young man was about 25 years old, and made his home with a brother in that vicinity"
