Battle of Iwo Jima

Iwo Jima, Japan

During the Battle of Iwo Jima, Harry Schmidt commanded the V Amphibious Corps, made up of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine divisions, the largest number of Marines committed to a single battle (eventually 80,000 men). Following a 3-day naval bombardment of the island, on 19 February 1945, Schmidt’s V Amphibious Corps landed on the island. The bloody 5-week battle eventually resulted in an American victory, but with a steep casualty rate (26,000 American casualties, including 6,800 dead).
