Mexican-American War is effectively resolved.

| Mexico City, Mexico

In a historic act of diplomacy, on Feb. 2, 1848, the United States signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, effectively ending the Mexican-American War.  The U.S. acquired a majority of Mexican territory, almost doubling the size of the United States.  Such actions encouraged migration to western areas, thus spreading the population over a diverse topography.
