Major Mary A. Canning, US Army Nurse Corps

Boston Globe, 5 Sep 1987: MARY A. CANNING, RETIRED MAJOR IN NURSE CORPS.

Retired Army Maj. Mary A. Canning, 86, who served with the Nurse Corps, died Friday in the Goddard House, Jamaica Plain. Born in Dedham, Miss Canning was a 1921 graduate of the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse at the hospital until joining the Army Nurse Corps inm 1941. Miss Canning served in Casablanca, Morocco, and also assisted troops in Italy. After World War II, she served in Tokyo for several years. Miss Canning returned to Dedham in the late 1940s and was a State Public Health Nurse until her retirement in 1967. She was member of Jacob Jones VFW Post Auxiliary, Dedham. Miss Canning leaves five nephews and a niece. A funeral mass will be said at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept 8, in St. Mary's Church, Dedham. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham.
