My father flew with FO R. M. Johnston in the MTO
1943 | Sicily, Italy
My father was Lt C. A. Anderson, http://www.warwingsart.com/12thAirForce/488thCrews04.jpg . He was a navigator/bombardier. He passed in 2009. He rarely spoke of his wartime service and shortly after his death I received the few war items he did save. As a child the one thing I remembered was that he said he flew missions in a plane called "Patches." Well, long story short, I tracked him to the 488th and while digging around on the internet I stumbled across a photo of FO Johnston standing next to his B-25 named "Patches."
My father flew with the 488th from June - November of 1943. The Squadron History shows he flew five missions with FO Johnston on two different planes, 8E - 42-32461 and 8L - 42-64545.
I'm afraid there's not much I can add to Colonel Johnston's history. Perhaps someone can add to my fathers.
