Janice Krantz Cardinale, d 21 Jan 2000

....Janice Cardinale, who retired from the Long Beach school district in 1995 after teaching there for 48 years, died on Jan. 21 while recovering from heart surgery. She was 75.

Born Janice Krantz in 1924 in Carbondale, Pa., she moved to Long Beach with her family as a child.

She earned a bachelor's degree from Fordham University and a master's degree in elementary education from Hofstra University, and started teaching in Long Beach in 1947.

In 1956, she married Frank Cardinale, who died in 1965.

A world traveler, she exposed her students to what she learned abroad.....

After retirement, Cardinale traveled and went to the theater in New York City more often, and tended her garden. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, Long Beach Historical Society and Brandeis Women.

She is survived by her son, Gregory Cardinale of Oakland, Calif.; daughter Pat Kline of West Chester, Pa.; and three grandchildren. She was buried in Pinelawn Cemetery.

In her honor, a scholarship fund was set up for a high school graduate to study education. Donations may be sent to Sandy Valvana, Long Beach City School District, 235 Lido Blvd., Lido Beach, NY 11561. Attn: Janice Cardinale Scholarship Fund.

Lt Frank Lonsdorf named his B-25 Combat Bomber after his sweetheart back home "Janice M Krantz", born 1924, Carbondale, PA. Lt Frank called her his "Duchess"..... He had completed 62 Combat Missions and returned to the States. In 1945, Lt Lonsdorf died in a tragic and unforeseen car/bus accident. His 3 passengers also died, 2 service friends and a young lady. In the bus, many were severely hurt including the driver who had a back injury. It was an unbelievable loss for the Community of Scranton PA.
