My YiaYia

Brooklyn New York

Hariklia Aridas Kostakos is my paternal grandmother. In keeping with Greek naming traditions, I was christened "Hariklia" in the Greek Orthodox Church after my grandmother. Yiayia (grandmother in Greek) was a soft-spoken, kind, loving and gentle woman with the beautiful blue-gray eyes, very uncommon among Greek people. She had some physical disabilities which kept her housebound, but her spirit was always cheerful and tender.
