Barnard H Seegmiller, 321st Bomb Group, 445th Bomb Squad,MTO

| Corsica

Barnard was a quietly Heroic man, no one would have imagined that this brave man could run directly into a fire and pull a man out.  This amazing feat earned him the "Soldier's Medal"... an Award so highly esteemed (and the event so freightening) that few are willing to ask what the Hero did ?  A B-25 Mitchell Medium Bomber of his Squadron has come in the landing pattern wrong, with wounded aboard and gas leaking everywhere.  The B-25 exploded on landing.  The Pilot alone was able to get out but still in the flames was entirely helpless.   Barnard caught-up to the nearest man in front of him (who had slowed down) as they neared, the flames reached out, Barnard snagged his jacket, knocking the man down and ran directly into the fire for the pilot, pulling him out and was extinguishing the flames with the jacket when the rescue crew came.  Barnard had been in the maintanence section, on the other side of a hedge row when they all heard the explosion and saw the ball of fire.   The C.O. Capt. Paul Cooper sat with the pilot Lt Goerge Walsh all afternoon and night and he passed in the early hours of the morning.
