She was born in Macon Georgia. She was the daughter of William Clarence Vickery and Sallie Avy Hutto. She was briefly married to Pete Evans when she was a young woman but after her divorce she preferred the company of her own sex. In her later years she had a life partner that she remained with for the last 20 or so years of her life. She served as an MP in the Marines and injured her knees which resulted in the amputation of at least one of her legs before she died but I think she eventually had both legs amputated. She died from a staff infection after having a pacemaker implanted.
