Israel Patnod late private of Company E 53rd Regiment Illinois Infantry being duly sworn according to law, deposes and says that he enlisted in the U.S. service as a private in Co.E. 53 Ills Inf Jan 26 1862, and served in said Co. till Jan 1864 when he re-enlisted as a veteran in the same regiment and company, and served in the same till July 22 1864 when he was taken prisoner but the enemy near Atlanta Georgia in battle and while in the line of duty, was taken to Atlanta first, from there to Andersonville, from Andersonville to Charleston S.C. from Charleston to Florence S.C. from Florence he was taken to a point near Wilmingotn N.C. where he was released or exchanged, from which place he was conveyed to Anapolis Md. whence he was sent to Baltimore, where in March 1865, he was furloughed to go to his home in Kankakee, Co Ill. He further states that he was not present when his Company was mustered out of the service and that he has never received any discharge from the United States service, and makes this affidavit for the purpose of procuring a discharge.
