Remembrance of Sgt Kerby

Star Valley, AZ

Sgt Kerby had only been with us a very short time in Bravo Co 2/27 Wolfhounds 25th Inf Div. He was assigned to the 3rd platoon and we were working out of a patrol base called Kolchek near the Cambodia border just south of the Angel Wing or the Parriots Beak. The 3rd platoon had gone out on an ambush patrol and was coming back in the next morning. We were told that Sgt Kerby had taken point on the way in and was walking thru a wet area, which the whole area had standing water, including the patrol base, which was just one huge mud hole. This whole area, being close to the border, had been bombed heavily in the past years. Sgt Kerby stepped on what we figured was a 250lb undetonated bomb submerged under the water.
