They Had Big Hearts

| Hendley, Furnas County NE

My great-grandparents raised 9 children of their own.  When their granddaughter, Gemisca was orphaned in 1919 by the Flu Epidemic which killed their daughter, Zetta and her husband Ervin Ayars, they took her into their home to raise her.

In 1927, another daughter, Ida was injured in a car crash, resulting in a stroke and the premature birth of her fifth child. This caused her to be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.  Ida's husband left her, so my great-grandparents opened their home again to their daughter and her two surviving daughters.  (The baby was adopted by other family members)
