In June, 1931, Nellie traveled to France find her son's grave from World War I. Maurice Leland Murphy was killed while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps at Mont Blanc, France. He had been buried shortly after he died but his and many other bodies had been relocated to a large cemetery for U.S. forces but the location of his new grave was lost. Many mothers traveled to France in 1931 to "pick out" the grave of an unknown soldier to claim as her son's. The exact location of Leland's grave has never been found.
