The following is a chronological compilation of events affecting Phillips, Texas -- the town, the schools, and the churches that made up the vital interrelated core of the community. At least one item is listed for each year from 1926 - 1990, the 65-year period that spanned the rise and fall of the “Phillipian Empire”, if it may be labeled as such.
1941 The new $20,000 Phillips Elementary School was opened, just in time, as the old red brick grade school had just burned down the previous December along with the equipment to be transferred.
The Blackhawk band placed first in a state contest.
The Phillips-Borger road was upgraded to State Highway 119. It was reported to be the most heavily traveled highway in West Texas according to the Texas Highway Department.
Harold Hope, a marine of the Class of ‘39, was killed at Pearl Harbor on December 7. He was the first World War II casualty from Hutchinson County Amarillo Daily News (Amarillo, Texas) > 1941 > December > 19 On Ancestry.com in the newspaper section This paper had a special note from Borger, TX quoting the wire recieved by Mr and Mrs A W Hope reporting Harold missing in action May 14, 1945 Borger, Tx The organizational meeting of the Harold Hope Chapter of the American War Dads of Borger. About 200 people attended. U.S. School Yearbooks > Texas > lubbock > Texas Technological College > 1940 Harold's picture is with the class of 1943 is attached Harold Wyatt Hope was born 10 Jun 1922 in Ranger Co, TX. His parents were Arthur Wesley Hope and Dora Bryan Harrison. When Harold was at Texas Technological College he and some buddies drove over to Oklahoma and signed up for the Marine Corp. The Marines never got a better bunch of young men.
