Re-dedication of his monument

In April 2009, a group of family and friends gathered at the burial site of Robert E. Cole and his mother, Eliza Cole, to rededicate their grave.  The Cole family had restored both headstones by adding a base that provided details of Robert's military service, which was not on the original headstone.  Stanford's Battery fired a 3-shot volley salute from their original Civil War cannon.

Comments

Private Robert E. Cole died of disease during the winter of 1861/1862 at Camp Beauregard, KY. Camp Beauregard was located just north of Union City, TN, just across the border. The site is now a cemetery with several modern burials. The UDC erected a Monument to those who died at Camp Beauregard from the epidemic. For some reason, there were only 15 headstones ordered for Veterans. These 15 headstones are marked with name and unit and the majority of them were from the 22nd Mississippi Regiment. One headstone is for Private Robert E. Cole. However, I do not believe he is buried there as his grave is in Black Hawk, MS. I can't explain why there is a headstone for Pvt Robert Cole in Kentucky.

Robert E. Cole enlisted in "Black Hawk Rifles", that became Company G of the 22nd Mississippi Regiment, CSA. This unit trained at Grenada and was sent directly to Kentucky. They were at Camp Beuregard, (near Feliciana or Fulton, KY) during the first winter and several became sick. Colonel Bonham, commanding the 22nd Mississippi died along with a few enlisted men, including Pvt Robert E. Cole. The Civil War Service Records show that his body and back pay was turned over to his father, R. W. Cole. Robert E. Cole is buried next to his mother, Eliza Cole, at the Black Hawk Cemetery (across the road from the Methodist Church).
