According to Rev. Alexander Donaldson's "A History of the Donaldson Family and Its Connections" a Samuel Elder married Nancy McClatchey in either Franklin or Westmoreland County, Pa. The 1790 census listed a Samuel Elder with a household comprising 2 males under 16 and 4 females. Presumably this would have been Samuel, Nancy (McClatchey) and five children. However, in 1790 Nancy would have been only 22 years old, so the number of children sounds large enough that it may have included children of Samuel from an earlier marriage. In particular, a Samuel Elder married Martha Pyatt in Franklin County in 1773. Sometime prior to 1800 Samuel Elder and the McClatcheys moved to Armstrong county. The census of 1800 indicated that this Samuel Elder was over 45 years old, so must have been born prior to 1755, and was old enough to have been the one who married Martha Pyatt in 1773.
