Here you can read the short life of Henry Guarnere, Medical Corpsmen, 47th Armored Medical Battalion, 1st Armored Div. Brother of Bill Guarnere, Band of Brothers.

He died January 6th 1944 during the Battle of Monte Porchia, near Monte Cassino.

Pvt. First Class Henry J. Guarnere was the older brother of Bill Guarnere. He was always fascinated by baseball and he collected pictures, articles and news. For Bill he was always the 'old' brother and he kept always a watchfull eye over his brothers. Henry tried to enlist the marines but he turned down. Then he came in the Medical Corpsmen Co. 47th Armored Medical Battalion, 1st Armored Division. He followed his training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Bill also tried to enlist the marines to but he turned down as well and came in Camp Toccoa. Henry followed the training and in the middle of May 1942 the 1st Armored Division was shipped by the Queen Mary to Ireland.

Here started the preperations for Africa. After Africa came Italy, Monte Cassino. One of the hardest battles of WWII. The First Armored Div. rested during the 2-months campaign in Sicily and then was deployed to the Italian mainland. The 1st Armored Division arrived in mainland Italy in mid-November 1943. It was used to exploit a possible breakthrough in the Liri River valley leading from Cassino to Rome. The first objective was Monte Porchia and a series of small hills between Monte Lungo and the Rapido River. To force its way into the Liri Valley, II Corps had first to clear the route along Highway No.6 by taking Mts. Porchia and Trocchio, south of the highway, and another group of hills and high ridges on the other side. The 1st Armored Division was to provide the elements of a force to defend Mt. Lungo until the attack be-gan, and then to assault Mt. Porchia. The 47th Armored Medical Battlion came in action during the assault. Henry Guarnere was killed during this assault on Janurary 6th 1944.

After his death the Army gave him the Silver Star for saving a private during the Africa battle. Also he had the 'Purple Heart'.
