About this Document
Mathew B Brady and many of the decade's best photographers created the photographs in this collection. There are detailed portraits of notable men of the era, as well as photos of soldiers, living and dead, battlefields, scarred landscapes, and cities burned and bombed by invading troops. They portray the horrors of war and images of life in camp. They represent photojournalism in its infancy and present us with real-life interpretations of our nation at war with itself.

It is a very famous picture of Phil Sheridan and some of his subordinate Calvary Generals in the Valley campaign of 1864 prior to defeating Confederate General Jubal Early at Winchester.

On closer examination, Phil Sheridan appears to be the individual seated immedfiately to the right of the standing officer. Compare with B 55.
pguyon
The officer standing appears to be the same Phil Sheridan in photo B 55.

The typed "Sherman" appears to have the "M" removed by hand and seems to have "ID" added in its place. Perhaps this actually "Sheridan" and others?
