According to his obituary, Ernest DePrati was the last known Civil War Veteran residing in Nevada County at the time of his death, which occurred in the County Hospital at 6:30 a.m., Thursday April 19, 1934. This obituary gives his name as; Emile DePrati or DePratti. Subsequent funeral follow-ups show him as Ernest and Emil. He was stated as being a native of England aged about 87 years. He was said to have enlisted in Co. E, 1st Cal. Cavl when aged 16 or 17 in San Francisco in 1865, serving the Southern border, Arizona Territory in connection with Indian outbreaks. After the war he engaged in mining and owned a mining claim on the San Juan Ridge, residing intermittently between North San Juan and Camptonville. It was stated that he had no known relatives, but it was believed he was survived by a wife, who was an inmate at a state hospital. He was buried with full military honors in the G. A. R. plot of Pine Grove Cemetery where his tombstone may be found on Red Dog Road, Nevada City, Nevada County, Calif.
