Final Statements, 1862-1899

The final statement was issued when a soldier died while in service and discharged by "reason of death." A copy was forwarded to the Adjutant General's Office. A document lists personal information, including cause, place and date of death; and often a physical description, birth place, and next of kin. Also included are often an inventory of possessions at time of death, heir's receipts for effects, paymaster's receipts for money owed, and forms for effects and pay when no heirs are stated.
