About this image
About this Publication Title
Cherokee Indian Agency (TN)This publication includes the records of the agent of Indian Affairs in Tennessee whose duties included preserving or restoring peace, and inducing Indians to cede their lands and move to areas less threatened by white encroachment. The agency distributed money and goods and carried out other provisions of treaties with the Indians. As the Indians were increasingly confined on reservations, the agents became more concerned with educating and "civilizing" them.
