Richardson John S. Company H 51st Virginia Infantry Rank at induction: Private Rank at discharge: Private Allegiance: Confederate [Source: Civil War Service Records, database at ancestry.com] John Summerfield Richardson was killed at Fayetteville, Fayette County, (West) Virginia on 10 September 1862 while serving as a private with Company H of the 51st Virginia Infantry. Company H (formerly called Company F) enlisted July 2, 1861, for one year; reorganized May 23, 1862. Captains were Granville R. Conner to April 1862 and William G. Price who was wounded and captured. Engagements that the infantry participated in during Richardson's time were Gauley River (Sept. 10, 1861); Carnifax Ferry (Sept. 11, 1861); Buffalo Mountain (Dec. 13, 1861); Fort Donelson (Feb. 12-16, 1862); Lewisburg and Clarksville (Feb. 18, 1862); Mercer and Princeton (May 17-18, 1862); Lewisburg (Aug. 28, 1862); Kanawha Campaign (Sept. 1862); and lastly Fayetteville (Sept. 10, 1862).
