Entered US Naval Academy as Benjamin Edes Long. 29 September 1865, Graduated, appointed Midshipman and assigned to US. Steamer Ticonderoga (3rd Rate) for duty. 1 December 1866, Promoted to Ensign 11 March 1867, Transferred to USS Shamrock (3rd Rate) at Port Mahon. 24 September 1867, SECNAV authorizes name to be changed to Benjamin Long Edes. 12 March 1868, Promoted to Master 10-18 July 1868, Tried by Court Martial for grounding of USS Canandagia, whilst Officer of the Deck, Guilty, sentenced to 'be suspended from rank and duty for 2 years with the retired pay of your grade". In view of youth and inexperience, mitigated to 1 year. 27 August 1868, After Review, SECNAV Gideon Welles remits unexpired portion of sentence. 6 October 1868, Reported to US Receiving Ship Constellation (2nd Rate) for duty. 26 March 1869, Promoted to Lieutenant 15 June 1869, Reported to US Steamer Lancaster (2nd Rate) for duty 31 March 1870, Reported to US Steamer Wasp for duty. 9 October 1870, Requests detachment from Wasp because, as Executive Officer, he has been ordered to stand watch. Rejected as disrespectful and insubordinate by RADM Larman, Commanding South Atlantic Fleet. 27 May 1871- 26 June 1871, Rebuked by RADM Lanman for discrepancies between the log, and punishment books, while he served as Exec of the Wasp. 11 October 1870, RADM Lanman reports him to SecNav G. M. Robeson disrespectful spirit and gross mis-statements and recommends a just rebuke from the Navy Department. 10 December 1870, Reports to USS Portsmouth for duty 8 August 1871, Reports to USS Wasp for duty. 20 November 1871, (BUNAV) detached from South Atlantic Fleet, with permission to return to his home. 28 February 1872, Awaiting orders at home. 3 April 1872, Reported to Naval Observatory for duty. 8 August, 1872 Reported to US Steamer Yantic for duty. 18 August 1874, (Asiatic Station) Detached from USS Lackawanna and reports to USS Ashuelot. 1 February 1875, His request for transfer from Ashuelot to Lackawanna not granted. 11 December 1876, Ordered to US Steamer Huron as Executive 22 April 1881, Promoted to Lieutenant Commander 14 May 1881, Ordered to report to Captain F.O. Selfridge, Newport RI for instruction in Torpedo Service. 29 August 1881, Killed by Torpedo Explosion, Newport RI. Additional Information on Naval Record. 1875 May 12, Detached from USS Ashuelot 31 March and waiting orders from the 11th instant. 1875 June 1, To the Hydrographic Office. 1876 July 31, Detached and waiting orders. 1876 Oct. 31 To the Hydrographic Office 1876 Dec. 11 Detached and ordered to the USS Huron as Executive Officer 1876 Dec 12 Previous orders revoked and ordered to USS Wyoming. In 1877 USS Wyoming was the Receiving Ship at Washington DC. She was commissioned on Nov. 20 1877 and on Nov. 26, 1878 departed from New York for European Station. 1880 March 16. Lt. Edes was transferred to the German Hospital on shore at Alexandria, Egypt in accordance with recommendation of Medical Survey. 1880 March 27. Commanding Officer,European Squadron reported from Villefranche to Secretary of the Navy that Lt. Benjamin L. Edes, Executive Officer, USS Wyoming had been left at the hospital, Alexandria, Egypt with orders to return to the United States when his health would permit. 1880 April 5, Detached, ordered to return and report. 1880 June 17, Detached as of May 21st and waiting orders from 17 June. 1880 Sept. 20 Ordered to instruction in ordnance at Navy Yard, Washington by October first. 1881 April 20, Ordered to physical examination. 1881 April 22 Promoted to Lieutenant Commander. 1881 May 14 Detached as of the 30th instant and ordered to instruction in torpedo service. 1881 August 29, Killed by premature explosion of torpedo at Newport, RI. For Bureau of Navigation, November 22, 1917. Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Long Edes. Born, Baltimore, Md. April 1, 1847 Killed by premature explosion of a torpedo, at Torpedo Station, Newport RI, August 29, 1881 Buried at Oakhill Cemetery, Washington DC. Appointed Midshipman, September 23, 1861, Lieutenant Commander June 1, 1881. Served on the Mediterranean, South Atlantic, Asiatic Stations and on Hydrographic and Ordnance duty. Highly esteemed by his superior officers and loved by his associates. He entered the Navy as Benjamin Edes Long, but in 1867 changed it to Benjamin Long Edes in compliance with the will of one of his grandfathers. Buried at Oakhill Cemetery in Edes Plot, Memorial Headstone at Arlington National Cemetery, Section 2, Grave 1071 Connection made 11 Mar 2012. |
