This photo actually shows a British Spitfire in US markings - NOT a P-40.

The aircraft closest to the camera (and being refueled) is a Curtis C-46 Commando, while the aircraft farther in the picture is indeed a C-47.

I suspect that these are single-engined Navy planes. Note that the tails appear to be single tails as well. All Doolittle Raid B-25s had twin tails.
